How are USTA junior national rankings calculated?
USTA uses a Points Per Round system. A player's National Standings List total is 100% of the singles points from their best 6 singles tournaments, plus 15% of the points from their best 6 doubles or mixed doubles tournaments, plus singles bonus points. Standings use a rolling 12 months. Year-end Ranking Lists use the calendar year.

Which of my child's results actually count toward their USTA ranking?
Only the best 6 singles results and the best 6 doubles results in the window count. A player can have more tournaments on their record, and anything outside those best 6 is ignored. In MainDraw, tap a National Ranking number to see the singles and doubles that count, up to six of each. The last row of each group is the lowest score that counts, so you can see what the next result has to beat.

Do bonus points count if the tournament isn't in my best 6?
No. USTA attaches bonus points to the tournament where they were earned. If that tournament is not among the player's best six, neither its round points nor its bonus points count.

Does playing up an age division help or hurt the ranking?
Points from an older division count fully toward a younger division, as long as the player has played a Junior Ranking Tournament in the younger division and the result is among the best 6. The other way, 20% of younger-division points count in the next older division. USTA also says the player must win a match for a played-up result to count.

How can I check how strong a tournament draw or entry list is?
On the USTA site, open the Players list and look up each name in the rankings and on UTR. MainDraw reads the Players list you have open, singles or doubles, and fills in National Ranking, UTR, and WTN in sortable columns, so you can sort the field by USTA ranking.
Do people really look up opponents' UTRs before a USTA tournament?
Many junior parents do, when they want to judge a draw. Some players prefer not to know. Doing it by hand means copying every name into UTR search. MainDraw runs that lookup with your own UTR sign-in and shows each player's UTR on the Players list. For 7 days after that, the Draw shows Singles UTR or Doubles UTR beside each saved player.
What's the difference between UTR and USTA ranking?
A USTA national ranking or standing comes from points earned by winning rounds at sanctioned junior tournaments over a set period. UTR, the Universal Tennis Rating, is a rating based on match scores against rated opponents, and it is run by Universal Tennis. Ranking is used for selection and seeding. Rating describes level. Many families track both. MainDraw shows them side by side and is not affiliated with either organization.

How are junior tournaments seeded?
USTA publishes Seeding Lists that use the same criteria as the National Standings Lists. Only the best 6 singles results, or the best 6 doubles results, are used. Each tournament's seeding criteria are set out in the national regulations, including Table 2, so check the specific event.

Why is finding and registering for USTA tournaments so frustrating?
The USTA website and TennisLink take a lot of clicks to find and register for a junior tournament. MainDraw opens USTA Find Tournaments with Sort & Filter ready. You can save that filter setup and open it again later, instead of rebuilding it every time.
I manage several kids' schedules. Is there an easier way to keep track of tournaments?
In MainDraw, Accounts switches between family players, the way Switch Accounts works in the USTA Tennis app, and opens a child's Upcoming and Completed schedule. When you save a USTA page, MainDraw fills in a bookmark name from the tournament title and date, so saved events are easy to tell apart.
How many tournaments a month should a 12-14 year old play?
There is no official number. It depends on goals, health, school, and budget. Because only the best 6 singles results count, an extra tournament helps the ranking only when it is likely to beat the lowest result that currently counts. In MainDraw, the counting-results list is where you check that.

Is MainDraw official? Is it affiliated with USTA or Universal Tennis?
No. MainDraw is an unofficial, independent app. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by USTA or Universal Tennis. It shows the USTA pages you open yourself and looks up UTR with your own UTR sign-in.
How much does MainDraw cost, and what do I need to run it?
MainDraw is free to download. New installs include 30 days of free Look Up. After the trial, Look Up is $0.99 per month or $9.99 per year through Apple. It needs iOS 17 or later on iPhone and iPad. Try Demo uses a sample roster and works without logging in. Browsing, bookmarks, and Demo Mode stay available without a subscription.
